Laura Carey was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1985. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ireland at the National College of Art and Design in 2007. After completing her studies she continued to exhibit and practice in Dublin and received the Travel and Training Award from the Irish Arts Council to undertake an artist residency in Reykjavik, Iceland with SIM -The Icelandic Association of Visual Artist in 2008. Her practice as a printmaker and artist brought her to Australia where to completed postgraduate studies in UNSW at the College of Fine Arts 2009.

Since finishing her studies she has continued to practice and participated in group exhibitions in a various spaces across Sydney and a solo exhibition Suburban Dreams in Chrissie Cotter Gallery 2011. Her practice focuses at our evaluation of the environments in which we live, using rich layering of culture and the built environment to create her own interpretation of these places.  She looks at the suburban landscape, using familiar images in unfamiliar ways, her work aims to create a world that is instantly recognisable, but at the same time allows the viewer to escape from the everyday and see the ordinary in new uncanny ways.

More recently in 2013 she completed a 6 month artist residency at Centrehouse Arts Centre and present the work in her latest solo exhibition Surroundings at Gallery Lane Cove in April was selected as a finalist and exhibited in the Art on Paper:Hazelhurst Art Award and the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award. This year she has completed her first Public Art Commission in June, while continuing to work in the studio on new projects.
